DISTRICT 30-4 A BASEBALL
Pearsall bounced back from a district opening loss to Uvalde with consecutive wins over Carrizo Springs and Crystal City this week to move atop the league baseball standings as they wrapped up the first round of 30-4A play.
The Mavericks currently sit atop the standings at 2-1. Crystal City is likewise 2-1 but lost the head-to-head matchup with Pearsall. Uvalde is 1-1 and won’t play until Thursday while Carrizo Springs sits 0-2.
The Mavs fell 7-2 in their opener at Uvalde despite a quick start out of the gates. In contests on Friday and Monday, Pearsall then rolled to 10-0 and 7-3 wins over the Wildcats and Javelinas.
“We had plenty of opportunities offensively but just could move runners over,” PHS Head Baseball Coach Ray Talamantes said of the Uvalde loss. “We left too many men on base.”
Pearsall opened with a pair of runs in the first but could not muster any additional offense as Uvalde rallied for the win.
“They took advantage of some defensive mistakes on our part throughout the game,” Talamantes said.
Prior to the Carrizo Springs contest, Talamantes, his staff and team took time to acknowledge the youngsters, and volunteer coaches with the Pearsall Little League program.
“After a two-year hiatus, the members of the Little League board have done a great job of getting the program up and running once again,” Talamantes said.
Senior pitcher Joseph Telles put in five solid innings of work, allowing a single hit while striking out eight and walking one against the Wildcats.
“Offensively Telles, seniors Sebastian Talamantes and Damian Longoria led the way with multiple hits,” the coach said.
The Mavericks then turned around on Monday evening and topped the Javelinas 7-3 during Military Appreciation Night at Carroll Nations Field in Pearsall.
In JV action, Pearsall topped Uvalde 7-3 and then turned around and took a 5-2 decision over Carrizo Springs last week.
Sophomore Diego Carrasco went the distance against Uvalde as the team was able to capitalize on Uvalde’s defensive mistakes.
The JV Mavs then notched their third win a row and second straight in district with a 5-2 win over the Wildcats. Freshman Rene Peralta tossed four solid innings and offensively, the Mavs were able to put the ball in play, scattering eight hits.
Having completed the first round of league play, Pearsall will be at Marion on Thursday, April 14 for a non-district tilt and then host Uvalde on Parent’s Night April 19.
