Pearsall had its nine-game winning streak snapped last Friday with a surprise 6-3 loss to Carrizo Springs but the team bounced back quickly, trouncing Crystal City 12-2 Monday evening, April 11 in District 30-4A softball action.
The Lady Mavs remained atop the standings despite splitting contests after routing the Lady Javelinas Monday night.
The Carrizo Springs loss also marked the first home defeat this season for the Lady Mavs and is only the third all season for the team.
“Errors really hurt us and they came out to play,” PHS Athletic Director and Head Softball Coach Reynaldo Ramirez said of the loss. “We hit the ball hard but right at people.
“We have a couple of injuries as well, key players out; but they beat us, no excuses.”
The win over Crystal City Monday evening put the Lady Mavs back in position to capture their eighth district championship in school history.
“We actually did not play our best game, but our girls pulled out a 12-2 win,” he said. “Our expectations are high. We are a little banged up and it’s been a long season but we are working to get healthy again to try to make a run in the playoffs.”
Pearsall needs a win over Uvalde at home on Tuesday, April 19 and a Carrizo Spings loss to secure the championship outright. Carrizo Springs is also 3-1 in the standings and takes on Uvalde this Thursday, April 14.
A win by both would force a first place playoff to determine playoff seeding.
