The Pearsall Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce the establishment of the memorial scholarship to honor the memory of those fallen firefighters.
According to the department, each year the scholarship will be given in memory of an individual who made an impact while serving as a volunteer firefighter. Outside the fire station on Oak Street, there are grave markers of those fallen men and a name will be chosen from there.
This year the scholarship is in memory of Efrain Leal Sr who lost his life in an automobile accident in October 2020.
The department has been diligently working to raise funds for the scholarship by hosting various events such as a yard and bake sales. Leal’s family, who have carried on his legacy, have made monetary contributions towards the scholarship fund.
This May, the department will be able to award three, $1,000 scholarships to deserving seniors.
Interested applicants can contact Victoria Ariza, Pearsall High School Counselor, for applications and information regarding the requirements for applying.
