Pearsall routs Pleasanton 23-2, 8-2 in playoff opening series sweep.
Pearsall’s state-ranked Lady Mavs flexed their playoff muscles in a bi-district sweep of Pleasanton last week, winning the opening round series two games to none.
The Lady Mavs crushed the Lady Eagles 23-2 at Pleasanton in the opener on Thursday, April 28 and then finished the job Saturday with an 8-2 victory.
In a nip and tuck series, PHS Head Coach Reynaldo Ramirez was able to work in all five of his pitchers in both outings and saw his offense score 31 runs in two games.
“We always have a game plan, we are blessed to have five pitchers,” Coach Ramirez said. “My thoughts were to pitch each pitcher once through the line-up in order to keep the Pleasanton hitters guessing and having to make adjustments.
“The series itself went as planned, we got two wins and that’s what’s important. I would loved to have had the same hitting as we had on Thursday but I give Pleasanton credit, they made adjustments. Our focus now is on Calallen.”
Pearsall will host the Corpus Christi Calallen Lady Wildcats this week in an area playoff series beginning Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in Pearsall. The second game is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 at noon at Calallen. A third game, if needed, would immediately follow.
In the Lady Mavs’ series clinching win, a quick start and consistently strong defense and pitching allowed Pearsall to cruise to a seven-inning win.
Ebony Garza singled and stole a pair of bases and scored on a passed ball. A pair of singles and a sacrifice fly out by Maddie Bradley scored another run. Sophie Garza then belted a stand-up RBI double to give Pearsall a 3-0 lead in the first.
Janelle Luna added an RBI single in the second to score another run in the second and give the Lady Mavs a 4-0 lead.
The lead increased in the third as Destiny Sanchez singled, followed by an RBI double from Bradley to make it 5-0. Garza then added an RBI double to make it 6-0. Brooke Gandara reached in a fielding error and scored on a Ceara Saenz sac fly RBI.
Bradley added an RBI double in the fourth to cap the Pearsall scoring.
Pleasanton added two runs following three consecutive singles with no outs and a two-out RBI double in the fifth.
Pearsall improved to 33-3 for the year and earned the school its 11th bi-district trophy.
