BI-DISTRICT PLAYOFFS

2022 District Champion Pearsall Mavericks
Pearsall cruised to a 5-2 victory at Crystal City to claim the District 30-4A championship on the road in their league finale last week.
The Mavericks finished 6-1 in league play, losing a 7-2 decision in the league opener to Uvalde as their only league blemish. The team won six of its last seven games. Its only loss was a 4-3 non-district clash with Marion.
Pearsall’s win also clinched a rare Spring sweep for PHS. The school earned district titles in boys’ track, girls’ track, a softball co-championship and finally the baseball league championship.
In the district title clinching victory, senior Izayah Ramirez went four for four at the plate with a run scored while Joseph Telles was two of three. Senior Damien Longoria was also two for four with a pair of RBI. Telles also went six innings, allowing only two runs while scattering nine hits and striking out eight.
The Mavs plated runs in each of the first two innings to build a 2-0 lead. They then added two runs in the third as the lead went to 4-0. Pearsall led 5-1 into the seventh when the Javelinas added a run. Pearsall clinched the title on a flyout to centerfield.
The team will take on Somerset this Friday in a bi-district playoff series against a team the Mavs swept during the regular season.
“It’s going to be a tough matchup,” PHS Head Coach Ray Talamantes said. “We have played them three times this year and it’s been pretty competitive all three times. No matter the record, that goes out the window in the playoffs.”
Despite his familiarity with his opponent, Talamantes says playoff success will rely on his team’s effort.
“Our chances to win are going to be based on our consistency,” he said. “If we can throw strikes, play good defense like we are capable of and execute offensively, I really like our chances.
“It’s going to be a fun series for sure.”
The bi-district series will have two games in Pearsall as the Mavs host the Bulldogs on Friday, May 6 for a 5 p.m. contest. The second game will begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. A third game, if needed, will be played Saturday, May 7 at noon in Somerset.
Tickets are available online for both sites and are $3 for students and $5 for adults. Gold passes, Texas High School coaching passes and district passes will all be accepted.
Pearsall concluded the regular season with a 15-10-2 record overall and won 30-4A with a 6-1 mark.
