The city of Cotulla canceled its council election this year due to a lack of opposition to the candidates who had filed for three seats at the table.
Two returning officials and one new councilor will be administered their oaths at the next city council meeting.
Mayor Javier Garcia and Place 2 Councilor Eloy Zertuche filed for re-election this year and went onto the cycle unopposed. At Place 1, Councilor Reynaldo Garcia did not file for election to a second term and leaves office this month. He will be replaced by Estanislado “Tanis” Lopez, the sole candidate vying for the seat.
The city last canceled its municipal election in 2018 for the same reason; Mayor Garcia and Councilors Lopez and Henry Gilbert Ayala were returned to office unopposed that year. Ayala left office in 2020 but has since been nominated to take the seat held by Juan Garcia, who died earlier this year. Lopez has served on the council for several terms over the past three decades.
