Early voting underway this week
Early voting began this week for the 2022 primary election run-off on May 24, in which a number of Frio County nominations are hotly contested.
The run-off elections in Frio and La Salle counties have been called because a number of candidates had made bids for their party nominations to the ballot in March and had not emerged as clear winners in some races with more than 50 percent of the vote. The two with the highest vote tallies in each race face each other this month for the nomination to the ballot in the November general election.
In the race for the Frio County judge’s seat, Mary Moore and Rochelle Lozano Camacho will face each other on the Democratic Party ticket next Tuesday. The winner will face Republican challenger Jessica Villanueva and, should they garner the signatures for eligibility, independent candidates Jose Asuncion and Gilbert Ortiz in the November election.
Incumbent Pct. 2 Commissioner Richard ‘Dickie’ Graf faces challenger Mario Martinez.
After a year in office, Asuncion decided to not seek re-election as Pct. 4 commissioner and intends to run as an independent candidate for county judge. His decision prompted seven individuals to seek the vacant seat.
Juan Danny Cano took a narrow lead over Noelda Garcia during the March primary and the two will face each other on the Democratic Party ballot this week. The winner will face Republican candidate Roy Kallio and Juan Estrada, who intends to run as an independent candidate in November.
Asuncion was the first candidate to run as an independent in 2017 for Pct. 4 commissioner.
At the district level, voters will choose between Trent Rowell and Jennifer Dillingham for 81st District Court judge; the winner will face Republican Sylvia Rodriguez in November.
In La Salle County, just two local races have gone into the run-off election. Vying for the position of county clerk upon the retirement of Margie Esqueda, Arturo Carbajal and Sonia Maldonado garnered the highest number of votes in a three-candidate race for the Democratic Party nomination. At the judicial level, incumbent Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace George Trigo faces challenger Ernesto “Neto” Ramirez. The pair took the larger portions of the vote in the March primary, where the race was split four ways.
The early-voting period began Monday, May 16, and continues for the remainder of the week.
The Frio County Community Room, 410 S. Pecan Street in Pearsall, will be open for early voting from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Thursday, May 19, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 20. The city of Dilley Municipal Court building will open Thursday, May 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, May 20, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
La Salle County early voting ballots are cast in county courthouse from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday, May 20.
Voters who wait until election day Tuesday, May 24, must cast their ballots at their respective precinct polling stations.
