Cotulla Garden Club Community Beautification Project volunteers
Cotulla Garden Club members raised over $1,000 for its Penny Pines Plantations fundraiser that will benefit victims of the Robb Elementary school shooting in Uvalde.
Members met on Thursday, June 9 and discussed the goal of raising enough money to purchase 21 Penny Pines Plantations to honor each victim. The group raised $1,080 towards the $1428 needed to purchase the plantations. The 50/50 raffle recipient also donated her half of the winnings to the club to help meet that goal.
“We would like to thank everyone who participated in this fundraiser,” Garden Club representative Leighton Storey said. “We were able to complete this particular fundraiser in just two days.”
Club members Felecia Snowden-Sosa, Rosie Tetzlaff and Kay Childers attended the San Antonio Garden Club district meeting on June 1 at the Botanical Gardens. The club was presented with the award for having the most new members this year.
We would like to continue our growth. If you are interested in joining our club, please reach out to a member, message us on Facebook, or send an email to cotullagardenclub@yahoo.com.
The club also announced the Cotulla May Yard of the Month winner, Anna Osoria.
“The Garden Club will also return to helping the community with beautification projects,” Storey said. “We will be picking areas of town that need some attention. The first area we selected was Front Street and the empty planters on the sidewalk.
“We solicited student and community volunteers and were quite pleased with the turnout. Our goal is to not only help the city look better, but to encourage community involvement, especially from our youth.”
The club recognized Angela Perales, Cecilia Perales, Rosie Tetzlaff, Laura Gomez, Sandra Seidel, Leighton Storey, Chloe and Erynn Ramirez, Frankie and Cyson Torres, Jiliana Muriel, Robert and Ryan Sanchez, Madison and Leland Gomez, Nasario and Gianna Garcia, Teagan Valenzuela, and Kenzie Seidel for their volunteer services.
“Because all these kids showed up, we were able to fill each pot,” Storey said. “The students received a certificate recognizing their community service hours they may use for requirements in their school groups or college applications.
“We are also very thankful for the generous donation of 15 Asparagus Ferns and five Texas Red Yuccas by Leonard Brown of Kinsman Farms in Pearsall. Cotulla’s Linda Moreno and Sandra Seidel also provided three bags of soil.
The Cotulla Garden Club’s next beautification project will be in Encinal at the post office the last week of July. Updates will be provided on the club’s Facebook page and volunteers will be needed for the event.
