Less than a week after 53 migrants from South America were found dead in a freight truck in south Bexar County, law enforcement officials requested emergency medical services at Dilley for 13 people being smuggled in an SUV.
Dilley police officers were dispatched at 4:45 p.m. Friday, July 1, to effect a traffic stop on the sports utility vehicle traveling along IH-35 when they discovered a crowd of illegal immigrants who were in need of immediate medical attention.
According to a report on the case, the female driver was stopped on the outskirts of Dilley for a routine traffic violation. Her identity is being withheld pending an ongoing investigation into the smuggling crime.
“The majority of the individuals were suffering from heat exhaustion,” Sgt. Adrian Ruiz said in a phone interview Tuesday morning.
A woman who was suffering from serious lacerations to her feet was transported to Frio Regional Hospital.
The suspect was arrested and transported to the Frio County Jail without further incident and will face several felony charges for human smuggling.
