2022 BABE RUTH LEAGUE WORLD SERIES
The South Texas 18 and under softball team from Cotulla won the 2022 Babe Ruth World Series Tournament and the World Series Championship July 18-27 in Jensen Beach, Florida.
The squad won the 18u World Series Championship and 18u Sportsmanship Award and have dedicated the title the victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde. All Defensive Team Awards and a Golden Glove trophy were presented to Miranda Gonzalez, Adisyn Reyes and Allyse Leija. All World Series Team – Offensive honors and a Bat Award went to Leija, Kennia Chong and Jacelynn Ortiz. Leija was also named the 2022 18u World Series Batting Champion and the 2022 18u Most Outstanding Player (MVP).
The team went undefeated at the tournament and allowed only five runs during that stretch. Allyse pitched several perfect games with Miranda Gonzalez behind the plate. Leija also belted five homeruns during the event and had numerous hits to record the highest batting average during the tourney. Jacelyn Ortiz added a pair of homeruns. Chong and Emily Vargas each had homeruns as well.
Each homerun during the tourney was dedicated to Uvalde as players pointed up to the sky following each one.
As a sign of respective and recognition, players on the South Texas team also wore maroon ribbons in there hair and had Uvalde Strong decals on there helmets.
Upon returning to Texas, the team plans on taking a World Series ball and a pin with a championship banner to Uvalde.
