Mavericks place 12th at annual event in Castroville.
Running without their top athlete, Pearsall’s Lady Mavs finished seventh overall at the competitive Medina Valley Invitational Cross Country meet on Saturday, August 27.
“Our teams went out and ran really hard and competed on Saturday morning in our first big competitive meet this year,” PHS Head Coach Ricky Medrano said. “We had a couple runners record personal bests on a really tough, hilly course.
“The varsity girls impressed and ran great together without their top runner as Makayla Smart led the way for them. For the boys, Romeo Vega led the way with a 19th place finish, dropping almost a whole minute off his personal 5K best.”
The Mavericks were 12th overall as a team.
Varsity girls’ results are as follows: Makayla Smart, 30th, 14:11.1, Layla Torres, 32nd, 14:26.3, Emma Hernandez, 34th, 14:31.1, Jezzie Leal, 40th, 15:07.9, Lorena Trevino, 42nd, 15:10.5.
Varsity boys’ results are as follows: Romeo Vega, 19th, 17:24.1, CJ Garza, 50th, 18:35.7, Alejandro Briseno, 60th, 18:58.2, 67th, Dylan Ortiz, 19:08.6, Jonathan Viesca, 73rd, 19:15.2, Chris Martinez, 74th, 19:16.3, Ayden Rodriguez, 88th, 20:16.7, 119th, Jevan Torres 21:11.
The JV boys and girls both finished 13th overall. Results are as follows: Angel Martinez, 34th, 19:53.4, Aiden Lucio, 66th, 21:54.4, Aydan Morales, 67th, 21:54.4, Steven Herrera, 70th, 22:08.1, Derek Rodriguez, 86th, 23:23.7, Brynden De Leon, 97th, 25:22.3; JV girls results: Tori Ortiz, 40th, 15:25.1, Izaely O’Valle, 45th, 15:28.8, Shalynn Vera, 63rd, 15:55.5, Kalista Gutierrez, 85th, 16:49.4, Isabel Gutierrez, 98th, 17:20.0.
Pearsall’s varsity teams will be competing in San Antonio at the Feast Invitational while the JV teams and junior high squads will be at the Dilley Wolfpack Invitational.
