Vega leads Pearsall with second place finish as Mavs earn team title.
Romeo Vega took second overall and five of Pearsall’s athletes earned top 15 finishes as the Mavericks finished first overall at the fourth annual Comfort Billy Nabours Oktoberfest cross country meet on Saturday, September 24.
“Overall, it was a great meet from junior high up to the high school divisions,” PHS Head Coach Ricky Medrano said. “I’m proud of every single student who competed hard this past weekend and had fun doing so.”
Vega led the team with a first place time of 17:18.7 while teammate Dylan Ortiz was right behind him in fourth place at 17:29.74.
Still battling through several injuries, the Lady Mavs were led by freshman Izaely Ovalle who was 11th overall in her division.
“With the season end quickly approaching, things are starting to click and this is when we want to start running our best,” Coach Medrano said. “And I believe we are on the right track.”
Varsity boys’ results are as follows: Romeo Vega, second, 17:18.176, Dylan Ortiz, fourth, 17:29.743, Jonathan Viesca, ninth, 18:03.238, CJ Garza, tenth, 18:07.280, Christopher Martinez, 11th, 18:12.467, Alejandro Briseno, 20th, 18:39.615.
Varsity girls’ results are as follows: Izaely Ovalle, 11th, 15:02.415, Tori Ortiz, 13th, 15:30.612, Layla Torres, 15th, 15:40.347, Sarah Brady, 16th, 15:41.479.
Ayden Rodriguez took second overall for the junior varsity boys. He clocked in with a time of 19:05.050. Jevan Torres was fourth at 20:21.399, Derek Rodriguez finished fifth at 21:03.246 and Brynden De Leon was 12th at 22:40.660. Isabel Gutierrez was the lone competitor for the JV girls and finished fourth at 18:14.868.
In junior high action, Pearsall’s seventh graders swept their fields as both Dogies and Lady Dogies finished first overall.

Pearsall will be in action in Poth on Saturday, October 1 in the final meet before district on October 12.
