PEARSALL MAVERICKS FOOTBALL
FIRST-YEAR COACH LAUDED FOR TURNING AROUND PROGRAM, OVERCOMING RASH OF INJURIES IN RECENT WIN

Coach Ruben Deleon
Pearsall Mavericks Head Football Coach Ruben DeLeon was named one of the Coaches of the Week by the Hispanic Texas High School Football Coaches Association following the Mavericks’ victory over Carrizo Springs on Friday, October 7 at Mack Laxson Field.
DeLeon was honored with the award after leading his team to a 28-27 win in the District 14-4A, Division II opener despite playing with numerous injuries on both sides of the ball. He was also lauded for having turned the Pearsall program around, going from an 0-10 mark in 2021 to 6-2 in 2022.
“It is an honor and privilege to receive that type of recognition in the state again,” DeLeon said. “It is a team effort, I wouldn’t be recognized if it wasn’t for my great staff and their hard work and dedication in preparing the players every Friday night.”
DeLeon’s spread-run offense is averaging 375 yards a game and just over 32 points per outing while the defense is holding teams to 20 points per game. Last season Pearsall scored 53 points for the entire year and allowed nearly 47 points per game.
Pearsall is currently 1-1 in district play, having lost a narrow 29-22 decision to Bandera. The team will resume action on Friday, September 28 at home against Devine.
According to its website, the Hispanic TXHSFBA is dedicated to celebrating and growing the influence of the Hispanic coaching community in Texas high school football.
