TRAFFIC DEATHS IN FRIO, LA SALLE
The Texas Highway Patrol has confirmed this week that a Laredo man lost his life Tuesday, November 22, after climbing out of his damaged vehicle on IH-35 and being struck by another car.
Emergency responders arrived at the accident scene three miles south of Cotulla shortly after 8:10 p.m. Tuesday to find that three vehicles had been involved in the chain-reaction crash and that a number of travelers had been injured.
Reports on the crash published by the Highway Patrol on Monday this week show that Santiago Cordero, 39, was at the wheel of a 2006 Mercury car when one of his tires disintegrated, causing him to lose control of his steering and sending the vehicle into a spin-out.
The Mercury came to rest at the edge of the interstate but its rear portion was protruding into a southbound traffic lane, investigators noted, and the stationary vehicle was struck by a 2022 Lincoln sport utility vehicle, whereupon it was spun around again.
Cordero climbed out of the wreckage and was hit by a 2018 Toyota sedan that had likewise been traveling south in the same lane, according to investigators.
Two occupants of the Lincoln were listed as having sustained non-incapacitating injuries. Two others emerged unscathed. The driver of the Toyota also escaped injury.
Cordero was pronounced dead at the scene.
Assisting the Highway Patrol at the crash site were deputies of the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office, firefighters and medics of the La Salle Fire Rescue.
