LEIJA COMPLETES RETURN FROM KNEE INJURY, LEADS COWGIRLS IN SCORING LAST WEEK
After a pair of early losses, Cotulla bounced back with a pair of lopsided wins to claim the silver bracket title at the Hondo Basketball Tournament over the weekend.
Returning from a knee injury that has sidelined her for a year, the Cowgirls’ Allyse Leija averaged nearly 12 points a game in action last week.
Cotulla was 0-2 in action on Thursday, December 1 as the Cowgirls dropped decisions to San Antonio Burbank and Gregory-Portland.
The Cowgirls took an early lead on Burbank but were outscored 41-33 in the second, third and fourth periods in a 57-50 loss.
Leija led the team with 19 points while Sedelia Wilson-Larkin finished with 18 points. Alinna Botello also tallied seven points.
Trailing by ten, 32-22 going into the fourth, Cotulla rallied to send things to overtime with a 23-point fourth period barrage. The Lady Wildcats would outscore Cotulla 7-2 in the extra frame, however, to take the 52-47 win.
Jasmine De La Garza led Cotulla with 13 points while Leija added ten. Miranda Gonzales went six of eight from the free throw line and finished with nine points. Wilson-Larkin added seven for Cotulla. Botello also tallied five points.
Cotulla then dominated play on Friday as they rolled past San Antonio Lanier 62-17 behind 23 points from Wilson-Larkin. Nine players scored and were led by Leija’s 15 points in a 48-21 rout of Ingram.
Cotulla jumped out to a 24-6 first period lead against Lanier and led 43-11 at the half.
De La Garza finished with ten points, Ivorie Romero added nine and Botello had four points in the win.
Another quick start against Ingram saw Cotulla race to a 27-7 halftime lead in that outing.
Botello had ten in the win while Wilson-Larkin added eight for Cotulla.
In action prior to the tournament, Cotulla dropped Carrizo Springs 37-26 on November 29.
Leija was eight of 12 from the free throw line and finished with 16 points. Wilson-Larkin added eight while Gonzalez and De La Garza both had five points.
Cotulla was at San Antonio Lee Academy Tuesday evening and will be in action at the McMullen County tournament this weekend.
