COTULLA SWEEPS FIELD, FINISHES 5-0 AT McMULLEN COUNTY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Cotulla swept the field, going 5-0 to claim the McMullen County basketball tournament championship in action at Tilden over the weekend.
Allyse Leija and Sedelia Wilson-Larking paced the Cowgirls in scoring and were both named to the all-tournament team.
In pool play action on Thursday, December 8, the Cowgirls routed Pleasanton 51-31 behind a 19-point effort from Wilson-Larkin. Alinna Botello added ten points while Leija and Jasmine De La Garza both had six points apiece in the 20-point victory.
Cotulla then took on Three Rivers in their second outing on Thursday, winning a lopsided 58-25 decision.
Leija led the way this time, scoring a team-high 18 points in the win. Wilson-Larkin and Botello both added 12 points apiece.
Miranda Gonzalez and De La Garza both also had six points each for Cotulla.
As they returned to tournament action on Friday, the Cowgirls had a pair of close outings with Falls City and San Isidro but managed to pull out both.
In their Friday opener, Cotulla rallied to take a 47-45 win over Falls City.
Leija erupted for 27 points as the Cowgirls pulled away late to secure the win. Wilson-Larkin finished with ten points while four other Cowgirls also scored.
Sporting a 3-0 mark at the event, Cotulla played San Isidro Friday afternoon with a chance to go unbeaten in pool play. The Cowgirls went back-and-forth in a taught affair before holding on to take a 37-36 win.
Leija finished with 18 points while Miranda Gonzalez added 12 points and De La Garza tallied seven in the win.
That victory put Cotulla in the title game on Saturday against Thorndale.
The Cowgirls jumped out to an 11-3 first period lead and then pulled away in the second half, outscoring Thorndale 17-12 in the second half to take a ten-point, 34-24 win.
Wilson-Larkin bounced back from a scoreless game on Friday to lead Cotulla with 22 points. Leija added eight points while Botello and Alinna Mendez both scored two points apiece.
Cotulla hosted Uvalde Tuesday evening and will take on Poteet at home this Friday, December 16.
