COTULLA COWGIRLS BASKETBALL
COTULLA SET TO OPEN DISTRICT PLAY THIS FRIDAY AT HOME AGAINST HONDO
Cotulla’s Cowgirls are riding a 13-game winning streak heading into their league opener this week after posting a pair of wins over San Antonio West Campus and Poteet in action over the holidays.
The team stumbled out of the gates this year with a 2-3 mark but have since found their footing in reeling off 13 straight victories.
Prior to the Christmas break, Cotulla topped Uvalde 36-22 on December 13 and followed that up with a 55-34 decision over Poteet on December 16. The team then knocked off Pleasanton 33-29 on December 20.
In action last week, Cotulla crushed West Campus 50-22 and then followed it up with another 54-36 decision over Poteet.
Allyse Leija averaged 10.6 points per game in the Cowgirls’ five wins. She had 14 in the win over Uvalde, eight points in the win against Poteet, 15 points against Pleasanton and then posted seven and nine points in the wins a week ago.
Sedelia Wilson-Larkin and Alinna Botello both tallied eight points against Uvalde while Botello and Ivorie Romero both had ten in the win over Poteet while Jasmine De La Garza added eight. Miranda Gonzalez and Quiana Mendez both had seven in the win over Poteet.
Botello added ten points against West Campus and finished with six points in the second meeting with Poteet.
Wilson-Larkin finished with eight points against West Campus and seven against Poteet.
In both contests last week, Cotulla was able to utilize quick starts to roll to lopsided wins. The team led 28-8 at halftime against West Campus and 25-14 through two periods of play against Poteet.
Although Leija and Wilson-Larkin have been the team’s top scorers for much of the season, the team’s recent run has seen as many as nine to ten different scorers contribute regularly.
Cotulla was at George West Tuesday evening in what should be a competitive outing and the Cowgirls will then open up District 28-3A action on Friday at home against Hondo.
