LADY MAVS TWO GAMES BEHIND PLEASANTON IN DISTRICT HOOPS STANDING
Pearsall closed out the first round of district basketball play with a pair of losses to Devine and Somerset last week, falling to 1-4 in league play and tied for fifth in the standings.
The Lady Mavs and Lady Lobos are both 1-4 in the standings with Uvalde holding a head-to-head victory. Pleasanton currently sits in fourth place at 3-3 in district.
Pearsall opened with a narrow 43-41 loss to Devine and then suffered a 70-30 loss to Somerset Friday night.
“Devine was a tough loss,” PHS Head Coach Victoria Rodriguez said. “We had some foul trouble early that didn’t help us at all. Somerset is the best in the district and we knew it would be a tough game. The score was unfortunate but we are still running with just five varsity kids and a freshman sub. “
Kristen Morales led the team with 21 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist while Alyssa Garcia added nine points, eight rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals.
Emily Valle added five points four steals, three rebounds, an assist and a block. Iliana Camacho and Mia Rendon both tallied three points apiece. Camacho added four boards, two assists and a steal while Rendon added two boards and an assist.
“I feel very confident that come the second round of district things will be a lot different,” the coach said. “I believe we will have at least one more kid back from IR so that will be very helpful. One extra player may not seem like a lot but it matters when the foul trouble and fatigued legs kick in.
“I’m proud of our girls, they have played well and there has been a lot of progress from last year and even more progress from the beginning of the year. They are playing well – unfortunately the record doesn’t show just how well and how hard they are competing.”
Pearsall was off on Tuesday evening and will be on the road at Floresville for the start of the second round of league play on Friday, January 20.
