“CORNERSTONE FOR PROTECTING COMMUNITIES”
Frio County commissioners have given the green light for the new administrator of the Nueces River Authority Region 13 to proceed with applying for grant funding for storm water drainage.
Commissioners heard from Javier Ramirez during a meeting on Monday, January 23, and learned a final draft for Frio County’s flood planning is slated to be approved during in March.
“There are grants that are up to $300,000,” Ramirez said. “They can be used to update and adopt building codes, flooding ordinances, comprehensive plans and land use plans. These plans are the cornerstone for protecting communities from floods.”
Pct. 3 Commissioner Raul Carrizales told the court he has been attending meetings and working with the Nueces River Authority since his time in office and provides the entity with updates on Frio County flooding issues.
“There are a lot of projects on list right now, including some from the city of Pearsall and Frio County if any funding is available,” the commissioner said. “There is one for the city of Dilley and one more in county area. I know Mr. [Federico] Reyes [Pearsall City Manager] has gone to all of the meetings.”
The commissioner said there are four projects on the river authority’s planning map for the city of Pearsall’s west side.
The court signed documents that will allow Ramirez to proceed with applying for the grant funding.
“Last August the court approved a resolution for the Nueces River Authority to go out for these grants,” Carrizales said. “These are first-come, first-served grants, so I wanted to get ahead of the curve and I believe we are.”
