Frio County Engineer Roxana Garcia was fired from her job Friday, January 27, four days after commissioners met behind closed doors to discuss her work performance.
Following a lengthy discussion on Monday, January 23, the court returned to open session and noted that no action would be taken on Garcia.
Frio County Judge Rochelle Camacho called a special meeting Friday evening, however, with a single agenda item listed “to consider / take action on voting to remove the Frio County engineer from her position effective March 1, 2023.”
Camacho and commissioners met behind closed doors for a second time before a motion was made by newly elected Pct. 4 Comm. Danny Cano to terminate Garcia. Cano’s motion was seconded by Pct. 1 Comm. Joe Vela and supported unanimously by Camacho, Pct. 3 Comm. Raul Carrizales and newly elected Pct. 2 Comm. Mario Martinez.
The court took no action on appointing an interim to replace Garcia.
Garcia, who has served as the county engineer since July 2019, oversees all infrastructure projects in the county and manages employees at the road and bridge department.
Camacho declined to comment on reasons for the court voting to terminate the engineer.
