DISTRICT 29-4A BASKETBALL
Pearsall notched a pair of district wins last week and take on the third and fourth place teams in the standings this week as the team gears up for a final playoff push in 29-4A girls’ basketball action.
The Lady Mavs knocked off Uvalde 56-50 on Tuesday, January 23 and then topped Carrizo Springs to earn a district sweep of the Lady Wildcats on Friday, January 24.
“We are fighting for a playoff spot,” PHS Head Coach Victoria Rodriguez said. “We finally have a couple of extra bodies so our bench isn’t full of JV (junior varsity) and freshmen kids.
“These two games this week are very important, but I feel really good about the girls being ready to step up to the challenge. I strongly believe this group of girls, specifically these seniors, are not going to let this opportunity slip through their fingertips. We want a chance at playoffs.”
Pearsall’s win over the Lady Wildcats was a tight, back-and-forth affair and came down to a clutch shot with time running down in the fourth.
“We really played well last week,” the coach said. “Carrizo was a very close game, coming down to the last fifteen seconds where Emily Valle found a way to get a difficult shot off under the basket and it fell in.
“After that the girls locked up and didn’t let Carrizo score. Winning close games like that is tough, it’s even tougher when it’s on the road; I’m really proud of them for securing the win.”
Somerset sits atop the standings at 10-0 while Floresville is second at 7-2. Devine is third at 6-3.
Pearsall is tied with Pleasanton for the fourth and final playoff spot. The two squared off Tuesday evening for fourth place.
The Lady Mavs will then take on Devine on Friday. Pearsall closes out the regular season on February 7 at home against Somerset.
