Leija tops Hondo at the buzzer, Cowgirls split district outings

COTULLA SITS FOURTH IN STANDINGS AFTER WIN OVER LADY OWLS, LOSS TO LYTLE
Allyse Leija hit the game-winner at the buzzer in overtime as Cotulla edged by Hondo 51-49 in district basketball action last week.
Cotulla picked up the big win over the Lady Owls Tuesday evening but a slow start proved costly as the team fell 80-65 to state-ranked Lytle on Friday.
Leija scored 15 points in the win over Hondo while Sedelia Wilson-Larkin led the team with 24 points.
Alinna Botello added seven points while Jasmine De La Garza pitched in four points in the victory.
The Cowgirls led 18-12 after the first and held a 28-22 lead at halftime. Hondo outscored Cotulla 10-9 in the third to cut into the deficit and trailed 37-32 going into the fourth.
Hondo made a run in the final stanza and once again outpointed the Cowgirls 15-10 down the stretch to tie the game and force the extra stanza.
In a low-scoring overtime, Cotulla outpointed the Lady Owls 4-2, with the deciding points coming on Leija’s last-second shot.
In action on Friday, Lytle poured it on early, jumping out to an 18-7 lead in the first and led 41-23 at halftime.
Cotulla’s offense got going in the second half but the Lady Pirates were also able to keep pace and did not allow the Cowgirls to make up ground on the deficit.
Cotulla outscored Lytle 24-23 in the third and 18-16 in the fourth.
Wilson-Larkin once again paced the team with 25 points while Leija and Botello both finished with 14 points apiece.
De La Garza added six points for the Cowgirls while Miranda Gonzalez finished with four points and JoAnn Guzman had two points.
With the district split, Cotulla remained locked in the fourth place spot in the District 28-3A standings at 3-4, one game behind Hondo, who is 4-3. Lytle remains in first place with a 7-0 mark while Crystal City sits second at 6-1. Natalia is fifth at 1-6 while Dilley remains winless at 0-7.
Cotulla is on the road this week as they were at Natalia Tuesday evening and will be at Crystal City this Friday with another chance to move up in the standings.
