A low fee, easy day trip
I went squirreling off recently because I realized that I couldn’t tell someone about any big parks nearby. There’s plenty of wide-open space down here, and some community locations, but not much by the way of big parks. Not much, but did you know there are options? One of those is even a fairly easy day trip for a low entry fee.
Choke Canyon State Park – in Calliham, Texas, near Tilden, Texas, on State Highway 72.
60 miles from Cotulla
70 miles from Dilley
75 miles from Pearsall
Made up of two units, Choke Canyon State Park is an often overlooked nearby park experience. Calliham (one unit) is a full-service park with campsites and amenities, and South Shore (second unit), is available for day use only, with boating, fishing, and birding. In all, the park offers fishing and birding, as well as swimming, camping, and hiking. There are options available for enjoying basketball, tennis, and soccer. Both units have boat ramps, with the Calliham unit offering fish cleaning shelters and a rock jetty.
You can camp overnight in a site with water and electricity, walk-in tent sites, or even cabins. The park is a stopover for many migrating birds, so if you take the park’s birding trail, you have to keep your eyes open looking for everything from water birds to songbirds. You can even pick up a free Junior Ranger Activity Journal at headquarters.
Now, you’ll need to make sure and review some water safety tips, as well as alligator safety tips… because, believe it or not, there are plenty in the park. All types of wildlife call the park home, making it a fantastic place to see a wide variety of South Texas Animals.
