COTULLA GIRLS POWERLIFTING
Cotulla claimed yet another team title, this time finishing first at the Natalia Invitational Powerlifting Meet on Wednesday, February 15.
The event also marked the final qualifying meet for regional competition. Cotulla will be sending 11 lifters to the regional contest. Alessandra Garcia, Quiana Mendez, Karla Benavidez, Kate Guzman, Nayeli Flores, Kayla Martinez, Abygale Gonzalez, Jenivae Rodriguez, Reychel Narvaiz, Emily Velasquez and Syrah Garcia all earned regional qualifying lifts.
Lifters who finish in the top 12 regionally in their weight class or who reach a qualifying total in their division advance to regional competition.
Cotulla rolled the competition at Natalia, tallying 50 points while second place Natalia had 37 points and third place Devine had 29 points. Karla Benavidez was named Outstanding Lightweight Lifter at the event.
She took first in the 132-lb. weight class with a total lift of 975 lbs.
Guzman was also first at 148 lbs. with a total lift of 815 lbs. while Narvaiz took first at 259 lbs. with a total weight of 865 lbs. Garcia won the super heavyweight division with her lift of 1,080 lbs.
Alessandra Garcia and Mendez were both second at 97 and 123 lbs. while Flores, Gonzalez and Rodriguez all placed third at 148, 198 and 220 lbs., respectively.
Kayla Martinez was fourth at 181 lbs. and Bella Linares finished fifth at 148 lbs.
The Region V, Division 2 and 3 meet is on Saturday, March 4 at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds in Robstown.
Regional competitors can qualify for the state meet by either finishing first or second in her weight class; by posting a qualifying total for their respective weight class or by qualifying within the “top two rule by classification.
