The two top teams in action at the Maverick Classic met up in the final contest of the event as Pearsall took a narrow 3-2 decision over San Antonio Christian in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Carroll Nations Field to earn the unofficial tournament title.
Christian was 3-0 entering Saturday’s contest, having notched wins over Bandera, Dilley and San Antonio Memorial. Pearsall matched that mark, notching tournament victories over Poteet, San Antonio West Campus and SA Lanier.
Although the event was only a four-game event with no titles awarded, Pearsall and Christian met Saturday afternoon to see who would remain the only unbeaten team at the tournament.
In the win over Christian, the Mavs jumped out to a quick 2-0 first inning lead and behind a strong defense and pitching effort from senior Abram Garcia, held on for a 3-2 win.
“It was a very competitive game that came down to the final two innings,” the coach said.
Garcia singled in the first to score two runs and the team maintained the edge behind his pitching arm as he went the distance on the mound, striking out two hitters while allowing seven hits and two walks. It marked his second win of the season as he went six innings in an 8-2 decision over Crystal City in the season opener.
Pearsall’s road to the unofficial title game started with an 11-1 win over Poteet in the tournament opener. Poteet plated a run in the first but the Mavs settled down and reeled off 11 straight runs to claim the lopsided decision.
Junior Diego Carrasco pitched five innings for Pearsall, striking out three, allowing four hits and a pair of walks.
Offensively, junior Landon Riddick excelled at the plate, going two for three with a pair of RBI.
The Mavericks had a pair of games on Friday, topping West Campus 8-3 and Lanier 13-0.
Sophomore Rene Peralta took the mound against the Cougars and tossed three solid innings, striking out seven hitters while walking four and allowing one run. Junior Elijah Luna came in to close the game.
Senior Ernesto Rodriguez took his turn on the mound Friday evening against Lanier and went five innings for Pearsall, earning a shutout win.
“Offensively, we were pretty productive,” Coach Talamantes said of the effort against Lanier. Seniors Matt Hughes and Garcia led the way with two hits and an RBI apiece. Juniors Riddick, Ace Urrea and Diego Carrasco all collected a pair of hits each, respectively. Urrea topped the team with four RBI in the 13-0 win.
Prior to the tournament, Pearsall opened the regular season with an 8-2 decision over Crystal City.
“After a rocky first inning, Abram was able to settle in on the mound,” Talamantes said. “Offensively, we were able to manufacture some timely hits and capitalized on them.”
Garcia allowed only four hits and two runs and struck out ten. Freshman Derek Elizondo came in and finished off the game, going an inning and striking out two batters.
In sub-varsity action, Pearsall’s JV team dropped a 1-0 decision to Crystal City in their opener before traveling to Floresville for tournament action.
The team topped Floresville’s white team 11-5 in action on Thursday before edging past San Antonio Southside 7-6 on Friday.
Pearsall returned to action Tuesday evening as they hosted Antonian and will be at the South Texas Slugfest tournament in Medina Valley this weekend.
