Pearsall’s CJ Garza preps for the mile run at Uvalde.
Pearsall finished third overall behind Class 6A Del Rio and Class 5A Laredo LBJ in track and field action at the Coyote Relays in Uvalde on Saturday, February 25.
Del Rio tallied 184 points to run away with the event while LBJ totalled 118 points to come in second overall. The Mavericks scored 100 points. The Mavericks also set new school records in three events.
The Lady Mavs were fifth overall in action at Uvalde.
Joey Ramirez captured gold medals in the long jump and triple jump and helped the sprint relay team of Leon Martinez, Nathaniel Rodriguez, and Curtis Saenz set a new school record with a second place time of 43.02 in the 400m relay. Gabriel Gutierrez won the shot put with a throw of 50’8″, setting a new school record in the process.
Saenz was second in both the 100m and 200m dash events, finishing with times of 10.83 in the 100m and 22.21 in the 200m dash. His time in the 200m set a new school mark. Jovonnie Robledo was second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 17.24. West Hurst was also second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12′.
Varsity results are as follows: 100m dash, third, Curtis Saenz, 10.83; 200m dash, second, Curtis Saenz, 22.21; fifth, Jaiden Ortiz, 22.93; 110m hurdles, second, Jovonnie Robledo, 17.24; 400m relay, second, Leon Martinez, Nathaniel Rodriguez, Joey Ramirez, Curtis Saenz, 43.02; 800m relay, fourth, Jaiden Ortiz, Joey Ramirez, Tristan Ellis, Alvaro Abrego, 1:33.40; 1,600m relay, fourth, Ayden Rodriguez, Alvaro Abrego, Tristan Ellis, Jaiden Ortiz, 3:43.27; long jump, first, Joey Ramirez, 21’5-1/2″, fifth, Leon Martinez, 18’2″; shot put, first, Gabriel Gutierrez, 50’8″, fourth, Joseph De La Rosa, 46’5-1/2″; triple jump, first, Joey Ramirez, 42’11-1/2″; pole vault, second, Weston Hurst, 12’0″.
The Lady Mavs tallied 43 points at the event for fifth overall. Del Rio won the division with 155 points.
Jezzie Leal paced the team as she won the high jump for a second straight week, clearing a height of 4’8″ in the event to earn Pearsall’s only gold medal.
Girls’ varsity results are as follows: 400m dash, third, Gezlynn Wolfe, 1:07.18, fifth, Jenevy Gonzalez, 1:08.16; 800m run, sixth, Gezlynn Wolfe, 2:41.50; 3,200m run, fourth, Makayla Smart, 13:19:00; 300m hurdles, first, Jezzie Leal, 52.72, third, Karicia Garcia, 54.91; 1,600m relay, fifth, Jezzie Leal, Delaney Vinton, Jenevy Gonzalez, Holly DeLeon, 4:39.72; high jump, first, Jezzie Leal, 4’8″.
Pearsall will be in action at the Border Olympics in Laredo this Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4.
