Local schools will send eighth athletes to the Texas High School Womens Powerlifting Association State Meet on Thursday and Friday, March 16 and 17 at the Comerica Center in Frisco.
Pearsall’s Star Rodriguez, Dilley’s Reyna Martel, Aundrea Rodriguez and Kelsey Eguia and Cotulla’s Alessandra Garcia, Reychel Narvaiz, Kate Guzman and Jenivae Rodriguez have earned qualifying spots to the state meet.
Dilley’s Martel was crowned the THSWPA Region 5-3A Div 2 Champion after posting a first place total lift of 755 lbs. in the 132-lb division. Rodriguez and Eguia were both second in the 198 and 220-lb. weight classes, respectively and the Lady Wolves finished third overall as a team at the event.
“I’m extremely proud of these girls and all seven of our girls that qualified for the regional meet,” DHS Athletic Director and Head Girls’ Powerlifting Coach David Silva said. “I hope it’s just a kickstart for the program to keep it going.
“Beyond having three lifters qualify for the state meet, what’s even more impressive to me, however, is that we finished third overall as a team. That says a lot about our girls and how hard they have worked.”
Cotulla’s Garcia and Narvaiz were both second in their respective weight classes at the Region 5-3A Div 1 event in Robstown while Guzman and Rodriguez finished fourth in their divisions but met state qualifying standards in their weight classes to advance to the state competition.
Lifters can qualify one of two ways for state competition, they can finish first or second in their division or meet a pre-determined state qualifying lift total for their respective weight class.
“The girls competed and represented Cotulla very well,” CHS Girls’ Powerlifting Coach Lupe Hernandez said. “The hard work of six a.m. practices for the last four months has paid off for these four young ladies.
“I am very proud of all the young ladies who competed at regionals this year.”
Cotulla finished fifth overall as a team at the event.
Pearsall’s Star Rodriguez finished second overall in her weight class at the THSWPA Class 4A DII Region V Championships in Edinburg last week.
She posted a total lift of 850 lbs. to finish second in the super heavyweight division.
“She has worked hard and earned herself a spot to complete at state,” PHS Head Powerlifting Coach Erica Tellez said. “She’s showed a lot of dedication and it has shown this season.”
Star’s lifts included 335 lbs. in the squat, 200 lbs. in the bench press and 315 lbs. in the deadlift.
Teammate Jesslyn Gutierrez finished fifth in the 181-lb. division.
