Dilley’s Kelsey Eguia, Reyna Martel and Aundrea Rodiguez
Kelsey Eguia was the state runner-up in her division and Dilley’s Lady Wolves were 11th out of 38 teams in contention at the Texas High School Womens Powerlifting Association State Championships over the weekend at the Comerica Center in Frisco.
Eguia posted a total lift of 990 lbs. to take second in the 220-lb. division. Natalia’s Jiselle Gonzales took first in the division with a staggering total lift of 1,180 lbs.
“I’m just so proud of these girls and the work they’ve put in, coming in at 5:30 a.m. every monring,” DHS Athletic Director and Girls’ Powerlifting Coach David Silva said. “I’m hoping this is a good kickstart for our girls’ program and I hope that it carries over to other sports. It’s exciting to have three freshmen and a sophomore regional qualifier coming back next season.”
Eguia’s lifts included 425 lbs. in the squat, 230 lbs. in the bench press and 335 lbs. in the deadlift.
Reyna Martel was f0urth in the 132-lb. weight class with a total lift of 790 lbs. She posted lifts of 320 lbs. in the squat, 150 lbs. in the bench press and 320 lbs. in the deadlift.
Aundrea Rodriguez was seventh in the 198-lb. weight class with a total lift of 845 lbs. She tallied lifts of 360 lbs. in the squat, 155 lbs. in the bench press and 330 lbs. in the deadlift.
The Lady Wolves tallied seven points as a team, which was good for 11th overall at the event. That total, however, took the team title with 36 points a mere two points away from finishing sixth overall and only five points shy of a third place finish. Elkhart took the team title with 36 points while Edinburg Idea College Prep was second with 14 points. Natalia was third with 12 points.
