DISTRICT 29-4A BASEBALL

Pearsall’s Abram Garcia beats the throw to second during recent action.
Pearsall bounced back from a recent losing skid by going 2-0 over the Spring Break holiday, notching wins over Uvalde and Carrizo Springs last week.
Since winning the Pearsall tournament and opening the year with a 5-0 mark, the Mavericks lost seven straight, including the league opener 7-4 to Floresville on March 10. The team erased that last week with a 5-1 win over the Coyotes and a 14-4 ten-run rule victory over the Wildcats.
“After a slow start and falling behind 1-0 early in the game, we took advantage of some timely hitting and Uvalde miscues to score five runs in the fifth inning,” PHS Head Coach Ray Talamantes said. “We played decent defense and had a good pitching performance from senior Abram Garcia.”
Garcia went five and 1/3 innings, struck out three, allowed five hits, a walk and only one earned run.
In Friday’s win over the Wildcats, Pearsall took advantage from the outset as they built an early four-run lead through three innings.
“We let them get back in the game in the fifth inning as they cut it to 5-4,” Talamantes said. “But we finally woke up and scored nine runs in the sixth inning, ending the game in a ten run rule.”
Offensively, senior Matt Hughes was one for four at the plate with 2 RBI and two runs scored. Junior Ace Urrea was two for two with an RBI, three runs and two walks. Junior Samuel Navarro was two for four with an RBI and two runs while junior Elijah Luna was also two for four with two RBI.
Pearsall evened its overall record to 7-7 for the year and more importantly, improved to 2-1 in the 29-4A standings. The team hosted unbeaten Pleasanton Tuesday evening and will take on Devine Friday at home in a pair of key league outings. The Eagles are 3-0 and sit atop the standings, tied with Floresville. The Warhorses are currently tied for third with Pearsall at 2-1. Somerset is a game back in fifth at 1-2 while Uvalde and Carrizo Springs are both winless at 0-3.
