Frank Newman Middle School 7th Grade Mariachi Band
Students in three mariachi bands from Cotulla ISD traveled to San Antonio on Saturday, March 25, to compete in the Texas Mariachi Directors Association State Mariachi Festival at Edison High School, returning with championship trophies.
The groups included the Frank Newman Middle School 7th Grade Mariachi, the Frank Newman Middle School 8th Grade Mariachi, and the Cotulla High School Mariachi Cotuleno. All three bands were awarded first-place trophies in their respective divisions and state titles.
The 7th grade band was named 1C non-varsity state champion, the 8th grade band was named 1C varsity state champion, and the CHS Mariachi Cotuleno was named 3A varsity state champion.
The 7th grade band performed “Cielo Azteca,” “Cuatro Vidas” with vocals by Mason Sanchez, and “El Pollito.”
The 8th grade band performed “El Gatito,” “Volver, Volver” with vocals by Arelie Ramirez, and “Al Son Del Mariachi.”
The high school group performed a medley of “Caminos de Michoacan” and “La Charreada” with vocals by Isaiah Saldivar and Bella Linares, a medley of “El Pastor” and “Crucifijo de Piedra” with vocals by Bella Linares, and “Son De La Prima” with vocals by Isaiah Saldivar, Bella Linares and Alejandro Coronado.
The bands’ directors are extending congratulations to the performers and are acknowledging the students’ work in preparing for the judged events, and are thanking community members, school administrators and parents for their continued support of the CISD Music Department, which includes the marching and concert bands, the mariachi groups and jazz ensembles.
The Cotulla mariachi bands are under the direction of Francisco Ramirez Jr. and Elio Ramirez Jr. Director of music at Cotulla ISD is Jaime Martinez.
