PEARSALL, COTULLA EARN DISTRICT WINS, SIT ATOP STANDINGS IN SOFTBALL ACTION

Pearsall’s Ebony Garza (Right) hauls in a grounder and fires to first for an out during the Lady Mavs’ recent rout of Devine.
With a single game on the schedule last week, Pearsall made the most of a slow week with a 14-1 rout of Somerset in District 29-4A softball action.
The win helped Pearsall keep pace with first place Floresville. The Lady Tigers are 8-1 in district while Pearsall sits at 7-1 but Floresville held the tiebreaker edge after winning their first contest. The teams were scheduled to face off for a second time Tuesday night in Floresville.
Pearsall used Friday’s rout over Somerset to continue to work on its game and try some new things on offense.
“The Somerset game was a great opportunity to work on our offensive strategy with our batting lineup,” PHS Head Coach Melissa Sanchez said. “It worked out well and I think the girls were able to step out of their comfort zone a little.
“Pushing past barriers and stepping out of our comfort zone is going to be crucial as we close out the regular season and start preparing for postseason.”
Pearsall was quick out of the gates as they scored four runs at the top of the first to lead 4-0. Both teams tacked on runs in the second as the Lady Mavs built a 5-1 lead. Two more runs in the third extended the Pearsall margin to 7-1. Four runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth blew the game open as the Lady Mavs took the win via the ten-run rule.
Tuesday evening’s contest will likely decide the district championship as Floresville has rolled through the district field except for a recent 7-5 loss to Devine. A Pearsall win would put the Lady Mavs in the driver’s seat to capture the league title if they can win out the remaining three games on their schedule.
Pearsall will not have a contest this Friday due to Good Friday and the team will resume action on Tuesday, April 11 as they host Uvalde. The team will be at Carrizo Springs on April 14 and Pearsall closes out the regular season with Parent/Senior Night on April 18.
