HONORS FOR EXCELLENCE IN NEWS, SPORTS COVERAGE, NEWSPAPER DESIGN
The Frio-Nueces Current earned the coveted Sweepstakes trophy and several first-place plaques for excellence in journalism at the annual convention of the South Texas Press Association, Thursday to Saturday, April 20-22.
The event was held at The Bevy Doubletree by Hilton hotel at Boerne and included guest speakers on a range of topics related to news writing, design, headlines, and production.
The Current’s coverage of news published during 2022 was judged in a number of categories by members of the North & East Texas Press Association for content, design, photography and overall excellence in newspaper publication.
Honors to the Frio-Nueces Current in Division I for small weekly newspapers in South Texas included first place for the Griff Singer Award for General Excellence; first place in News Writing for editor Marc Robertson; first place in News Photos for staff writer Amanda Brown Snowden and managing editor Manuel Azocar III; first place in Sports Coverage; first place in Sports Photography for Azocar; first place in Page Design; first place in Display Advertising by Azocar and production manager Lonnie Herrera; and first places in both Editorial Writing and Humorous Column Writing for Robertson.
The Current took second place in Headline Writing by staff writer Breyana Segura and Robertson; and second place for special publications for the newspaper’s 2022 South Texas Hunting Guide. Third-place honors included those for Serious Column Writing by Robertson, Lifestyle Pages, and Feature Writing by Robertson.
The Sweepstakes award was made to the Current for becoming the highest-scoring newspaper in the contest.
“The Current won the top journalism awards in its division in this year’s contest,” Publisher Craig Garnett said of the awards. “The honor speaks volumes about the staff’s dedication to the mission of fair and accurate reporting.”
“As newspapers across the country continue to go out of existence, it is more important now than ever to recognize what communities – especially those in rural areas – stand to lose without a local source of journalism,” the publisher added. “We are grateful to all those who read and advertise in the Current. Their support is vital.”
This year marks the 5oth at the Current for Herrera, who joined the newspaper after finishing high school in 1973, when the publication was known as the Pearsall Leader. Azocar joined the Current as a sports reporter in June 1993; Robertson was hired as a staff writer in August 1995. Breyana Segura has been employed as a staff writer at the Current since 2012. Staff writer and photographer Amanda Brown Snowden joined the Current in 2019.
The South Texas Press Association is the largest regional organization of its kind in the United States and includes newspapers in towns from Ozona in West Texas to Wharton in East Texas; and from Round Rock in Central Texas to towns along the Gulf of Mexico as far as the Rio Grande Valley on the Mexican border.
