COTULLA TOPS CRYSTAL CITY, DILLEY TO SWEEP DISTRICT 28-3A FIELD AND EARN FIRST ROUND HOME PLAYOFF

Cotulla wrapped up a perfect district slate, going 10-0 in 28-3A action and clinched a home field playoff contest with San Antonio West Campus on Thursday evening, April 27.
The Cowgirls allowed only two runs in its final two outings last week, crushing Crystal City 6-2 and blanking rival Dilley 10-0 Friday night to sweep the district field.
In the Dilley, Cowgirls’ ace Allyse Leija notched her 100th district strikeout as she pitched a perfect game with no hits or walks allowed. She has accumulated over 200 strikeouts this season.
“We’re playing with a lot of confidence right now,” CHS Head Coach George Martinez said. “The girls capped off district play with a convincing victory over our rival Dilley last Friday night. They have a great mindset at this point which I feel will definitely help us as we face West Campus in our first round.
“I am extremely proud of our effort, hard work and team chemistry. I can’t wait to see how we will respond in the playoffs.”
Martinez is not overlooking West Campus in his team’s first round contest. The Lady Cougars are young and inexperienced but played tough opposition in District 27-3A.
“As far as our first round opponent, we really don’t know much about them,” he said. “They’re a fairly new program but have been playing in a top-heavy district.”
West Campus took on state-ranked Jourdanton and always-tough Poth twice in district this season.
West Campus was the fourth place team in District 27-3A. The winner of that contest will take on the winner between Columbus and Marion in the second round. Cotulla finished the regular season with a 24-3 mark overall and went 10-0 in league play.
