Richard “Rick” Alvarez, 63, of McAllen, died on Monday, May 1, 2023. He was born on June 30, 1959 to Adolfo and Guadalupe Alvarez of Pearsall.

He is preceded in death by his mother.

Rick is survived by his father Adolfo Alvarez Sr., his four children, Richard Alvarez II (Tosha Alvarez), Austin Alvarez, Aaron Alvarez, and Adrian Alvarez. He is also survived by his brothers Adolfo ‘Al’ Alvarez, Alfredo “Perry” Alvarez (Juanita M. Alvarez), Arturo Alvarez, and Albert Alvarez, and sisters Mary Jane Garcia (Danny Garcia), Adriana Gonzales (Sam Gonzales), Annette Alvarez and Alice Martinez, and grandchild Klayton Alvarez. Rick is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

Descending from a legacy of activism he embraced his role in public service alongside his father, former Frio County Commissioner, Adolfo Alvarez. A strong advocate for civil and voting rights, he took an active role in local and state politics at an early age.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rivera Funeral Home in McAllen. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 13        from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Rivera Funeral Home, McAllen. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rivera Funeral Home, McAllen.
