STATE TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
GILMER TAKES FIRST IN 400M RELAY AS BLAZING FIELD CLOCKS IN WITH IMPRESSIVE TIMES
Competing in a blisteringly fast field, Pearsall’s 400m relay team finished ninth overall at the UIL State Track and Field Championships on Thursday, May 11, earning the distinction of being among the ten fastest teams in the state in Class 4A.
The team of Leon Martinez, Nathaniel Rodriguez, Joey Ramirez and Curtis Saenz broke the school record in the sprint relay three times this season. They initially set the new mark in Uvalde with a time of 43.02. They then set the new standard at the Devine meet and tied it at the Texas Relays in Austin at 42.50. Pearsall then set the current mark of 42.45 in winning the district championship at Somerset.
“Overall, we felt that we had a great track season. It was filled with great competition, broken records, and growth for our student athletes as competitors and as young men,” PHS Head Track Coach Julian Hernandez said. “Going into the state meet, we knew that it would be our toughest challenge to date. Although the race did not go how we planned, we were all very proud of these young men for competing and running their hardest in the face of this very tough competition.
“They worked hard all season long and continued to raise the bar every meet. Regardless of the outcome, it was awesome for our athletes to compete at the state meet and to be among the few Mavericks in history that have gotten to do so. We are all very proud of these athletes and are even more determined to make it back next year.”
Pearsall finished ninth in the Class 4A field with a time of 42.72 in the event last Thursday in Austin. Gilmer’s Tyson Wilson, Rohan Fluellen, Ta’Erik Tate and Will Henderson literally ran away from the field to win the event with an impressive time of 41.15. Wichita Falls Hirschi was second at 41.79. Three teams finished with sub-42 second times.
