Dilley High School graduating senior Billy Hernandez (Photo above) earned the gold medal and a Division I rating of ‘Superior’ from his judge at the University Interscholastic League State Solo and Ensemble Contest for his performance of a Class I solo on tuba, played from memory, in competition on Monday, May 29, at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville. Also advancing to the UIL State contest were snare drum soloist, graduating senior and salutatorian Sean Kelley (Photo below, top right), who earned a Division II rating and the silver medal for his performance; the tuba quartet (L-R) of DHS junior Daniel Kelley, freshman Dhylan Moreno, Hernandez, and freshman Jacob Garcia, earning a Division II rating of ‘Excellent’; and flute soloist Klaudya Garcia, sophomore. All qualified for the state contest by earning Division I ratings of ‘Superior’ for their performances in the UIL Regional competition, held at Eagle Pass in February.
