SECURITY MEASURE DICTATES ONLY CLEAR BAGS ALLOWED NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR
Pearsall ISD announced Monday evening that students will only be allowed to carry transparent backpacks when the new academic year begins.
The new requirement puts PISD in line with other Texas school districts responding to a recent increase in security threats.
The district conducted a survey earlier this month for input from parents and staff regarding student backpacks and related safety concerns. Results published this week indicate over 700 community members had participated in the survey and 48 percent were in favor of clear backpacks. Staff numbers, however, showed that as many as 76 percent of district employees favored students bringing only clear or transparent backpacks to school.
“Each campus administrator has been asked what they feel is best regarding student backpacks,” PISD Superintendent Dr. Nobert Rodriguez said in a prepared statement. “All are in favor of having students bring clear backpacks to school this next year.”
According to the community news release, the district is making plans to provide clear backpacks to students who are unable to purchase their own.
