SEPT. 16 EVENT AT PLAZA FLORITA CELEBRATES CULTURAL HERITAGE
Cotulla’s historic Plaza Florita will serve as the backdrop to a September 16 event that the city council has agreed to fund in celebration of the community’s Hispanic culture.
The first Hispanic Heritage Festival will include live entertainment, games such as the traditional cake walk, and other activities focused on highlighting the history of Hispanic settlement in La Salle County.
Funding for the festival will come from Cotulla’s hotel occupancy tax revenues, which are aimed at supporting events that attract visitors to the area and help boost the local economy.
The city of Cotulla has purchased at least three properties that surround Plaza Florita and is drafting long-term plans for their preservation or repurposing to create a historic district focused on the Hispanic heritage of the community. Both the plaza and its adjoining Welhausen School have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The motion to organize and fund this year’s festival was made at a July meeting by Councilor Manuel Rodriguez, seconded by Councilor Eloy Zertuche and supported unanimously.
