Picking up where they left off a year ago, Dilley swept the boys’ and girls’ fields at Ingram last Saturday, earning titles in both divisions to open the 2023 cross country season.
Led by senior runners Anthony Guerra and Chloe Rodriguez, Dilley dominated both divisions en route to the team titles.
“It feels great to start the season victorious with both our boys and girls placing first,” DHS Head Cross Country Coach Victor Flores said. “Even though it was a small meet, we are very proud of our varsity and JV runners on their performances. I thought they handled the competition, hot weather and the hills very well. It was a good experience for all our runners.”
Flores said he hopes it’s only the beginning of what’s to come for his squad.
“We still have lots of hard work ahead of us as the competition gets harder and tougher,” he said. “I’m excited to see how the season is going to progress as we face more competitive teams with the schedule we set up. Our season started off good and looks promising for both sides, but we still have some work to do to accomplish our goals for the season.”
Guerra was third overall for the Wolves while Rodriguez placed fourth in the girls’ division.
Dilley had five athletes finish in the top ten in the boys’ division while four of Dilley’s Lady Wolves earned top ten finishes.
Brazos Viesca was seventh for Dilley, Josiah Benavides was eighth, Angel Martinez finished ninth and Xavier Hernandez placed tenth for the Wolves.
Finishing behind Rodriguez for the Lady Wolves was Edelyn Rodriguez in fifth, Jnessa Nickles in seventh and Jewlea Tate was eighth while Lily Ayala came in 15th and Klarissa Vasquez was 20th.
In junior varsity action, the JV boys were led by Clause Castaneda, who won the division. Nehemiah Osio was second and Amos Osio finished eighth.
Azaela Espinoza was third overall for the JV girls while Janessa Mendez took fifth overall.
Dilley will be in action this week as the team travels to Floresville for the Tigers Invitational Meet on Saturday, August 19.
