Pearsall opened the volleyball season last week, dropping a five-set decision to Dilley and then went 2-3 in tournament action at Natalia over the weekend.
The Lady Mavs, who lost a number of seniors from a year ago, fell behind early in their loss to Dilley, dropping the first two sets.
The young team bounced back, however, tying things up 2-2. Dilley ultimately prevailed in the fifth and final set, taking the win three games to two in the August 4 contest.
Pearsall then headed to Natalia for their first tournament of the year on Thursday, August 10.
“The girls fought till the end and never gave up, their nerves caught up to them at the end,” PHS Head Coach Erica Tellez said. “But overall, I was wanting the girls to use this tournament to improve and I feel like they did and learned how to play together.”
The Lady Mavs opened against a strong San Antonio Cole team but fell in straight games, losing 20-25, 17-25. The team bounced back in their second outing, rolling past Knippa two games to none to even their tournament record at 2-2. Pearsall won by scores of 25-14, 25-20.
The team continued its momentum on Friday, notching another sweep of Charlotte in their opened on August 11, winning 25-22 and 25-16.
Pearsall, however, would fall in straight sets to the host Lady Mustangs in their second outing, dropping a 16-25, 13-25 decision.
Pearsall then dropped their final outing of the event on Saturday against Medina. The team fought hard in the finale, falling in three games, 20-25, 26-24 and 24-26.
The Lady Mavs took on Brackettville and Crystal City in a dual match Tuesday evening in Crystal City and will then be at the Boerne tournament this weekend.
