The Texas Highway Patrol confirmed late last week that it is conducting an investigation into an August 9 incident in which a trooper was struck by a vehicle beside IH-35 in La Salle County.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene of the crash near Milemarker 55 shortly after 6:50 p.m. last Wednesday to find that the trooper had sustained serious injuries when he was hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Medics of the La Salle Fire Rescue were dispatched and reported finding an accident scene that had ultimately involved three vehicles. The emergency medical service confirmed later that three people had suffered injuries in the collision. Two were subsequently airlifted by helicopter to San Antonio; one was transported by ambulance to Laredo.
A preliminary report on the crash from the Department of Public Safety indicates the trooper had been assisting a motorist beside the southbound lanes of the interstate when he was hit. La Salle Fire Rescue later reported that another vehicle was struck in what responders are describing as a chain-reaction crash.
The trooper’s injuries have been described by the DPS as not life-threatening.
Southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for three hours during the accident scene investigation and clean-up. The Highway Patrol was assisted by deputies of the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and agents of the US Border Patrol.
