DILLEY WOLVES FOOTBALL
SANTOS RUSHES FOR 155 YARDS AND TWO TOUCHDOWNS FOR DILLEY.
Aside from a defensive score allowed, Dilley controlled things from start to finish last week cruising to a 23-7 win over Boerne Geneva to improve to 2-0 for the year.
The Wolves controlled the action and heavily outgained the Eagles in a low scoring but lopsided decision.
“The boys are coming along as planned,” DHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David Silva said. “Geneva’s passing attack and fast tempo was a concern, but our defense didn’t panic and our pressure was too much. Dorian Aranda, Jacob Lopez and Elias Aguirre came up big in the secondary.
“Bubba Reyes, Roman Martel, Aiden Gonzalez, Juan A. Garcia, Johnny Rodriguez and Chris Medrano brought pressure all night.”
The coach said that offensively, his team is coming around as well and that running back Ethan Santos is finding his rhythm in the offense.
“Offensively, Ethan Santos is getting comfortable with the offense and is starting to get going,” he said. “Bubba Garcia had a good game as well. Our special teams are looking good as Santiago Cruz was two for three on his PATs and added a field goal in his kicking duties.
“Being 2-0 just makes practices more competitive and fun, mentally the boys are more focused.”
Santos made a huge leap from week one to last Friday, rushing for 155 yards as he took on the bulk of the offensive load. He carried 27 times and had a pair of touchdowns.
He put the Wolves on the board with a 22-yard scoring run in the second to make it 7-0. Boerne then stepped in front of a pass and returned it for a score as they were able to tie the game in the second 7-7.
That would prove to be as close as they could get as Dilley reeled off 16 unanswered points after that.
Cruz booted a 22-yard field goal in the second as the Wolves went up 10-7 at halftime.
Santos then broke off a 28-yard touchdown run in the third as Dilley increased the margin to 17-7.
Dorian Aranda iced the game in the third as he took a punt and raced 66 yards for a touchdown. His second of the young season.
The Wolves rolled up 269 yards of total offense and 15 first downs despite running 15 fewer plays than the Eagles. A total of 262 of Dilley’s yardage came on the ground with Santos accounting for 155 yards of that. Garcia added 77 yards on nine carries while Jonavyn Gonzalez finished with 30 yards on eight totes.
Quarterback Seth Cano went two of six passing for seven yards and had a pair of interceptions.
Defensively, the Wolves picked off Boerne three times and limited the Eagles to 189 yards of total offense and 12 first downs.
Aiden Gonzalez led the team with 11 total tackles, a sack and a tackle for a loss. Jonavyn Gonzalez added nine tackles while Juan Garcia and Jacob Lopez both had six tackles apiece and Lopez added an inteception. Along with his punt return for a score, Aranda also picked off a pair of passes.
Dilley will hit the road this week to take on rival Cotulla in the annual IH-35 clash between the schools. Cotulla earned a 34-20 decision a year ago at Dilley’s Gosch Field in a spirited contest that went back-and-forth until the end.
Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cotulla’s Myers Memorial Stadium.
