Dr. Jack Seals
Dr. Jack Seals has come out of retirement to serve in his former capacity as superintendent of Cotulla ISD during the period in which school board members conduct interviews and choose their top candidate for the job.
The interim superintendent was summoned by the Cotulla ISD Board of Trustees this summer after Supt. Ruben Cervantes announced his retirement in late July. Cervantes had been hired as superintendent for the district in 2021, replacing Jack Seals, who had served in the position at Cotulla for ten years.
Supt. Seals previously served 20 years as superintendent at Dilley ISD.
In his temporary position back at Cotulla ISD today, the superintendent said he believes student safety is the top priority for the district and remains the number one concern among parents sending their children to the district’s four campuses in Cotulla and Encinal.
Continuity and consistency in the district’s application of policies and procedures, he said, will help reassure the public that La Salle County’s children are in safe hands while pursuing their education.
“It’s important to keep the district headed down the road in the direction that the board has set,” Seals said last week. “The main topic we are addressing continually is campus security, so that all our children can obtain the education they deserve in the safest environment we can provide.”
Cotulla ISD has begun putting in place a rake of security measures aimed at protecting students, including controlled-entry vestibules at all campuses, state-mandated fencing at all facilities, full-time security camera coverage, ballistic window covering, and an innovative crisis alert notification system whose alarm buttons are carried by all district employees. The district has four full-time sheriff’s deputies patrolling campuses as school resource officers, and Cotulla ISD has adopted the Guardian District policy that allows specially trained employees to carry concealed weapons.
“I’m here to ensure that we continue providing every measure that we have promised our community, and that we do it without interruption,” the interim superintendent said.
Cotulla ISD board members are expecting to choose a finalist for the superintendent’s position from a slate of applicants after interviews within the month.
