Paul Gonzalez was 15th and Angela Vargas came in 19th for Cotulla in action at the Maverick Stampede Cross Country Invitational in Pearsall on Saturday, September 23.
“Paul continues to lead the Cowboys,” CHS Head Coach Jose Olvera said. “He was able to shave a few seconds off his time and came home with a medal.
“Jesus Alcocer also saw an improvement, but fell short of a medal in 30th place.
“On the girls’ side, Angela Vargas was our only varsity girls’ runner and placed 19th.”
Short on runners as it is this season, Olvera said his squad suffered another setback following the event.
“Unfortunately, on the varsity level we added another (runner) to the injury list,” he said. “However, in the sub-varsity division we came home with two third place teams and a fourth place team.”
Varsity boys’ results are as follows: 15th, Paul Gonzalez, 19:22.09, 30th, Jesus Alcocer, 20:50.06.
Varsity girls’ results are as follows: 19th, Angela Vargas, 16:23.96.
Junior varsity girls’ results are as follows: 10th, Isabella Gonzalez, 17:42.96, 15th, Juliana Garcia, 18:52.18.
Olvera praised the efforts of his younger runners and their success at the event.
“Eighth grader Emmanuel Lopez continues to run strong and has paced the cowboys at every meet, placing fourth overall this week,” the coach said. “Jerick Gonzales also medaled this meet.
“Our eighth grade Cowgirls’ team continues to grow, they came home with a third place title.”
Carina Rodriguez led the squad as she was 15th while Leila Olvera was 21st.
“In seventh grade action, we had four runners place with Pablo Garcia relentlessly keeping his lead,” the coach said. “Newcomer Joaquin Gonzales ran determined and placed 15th while Royce Garcia placed 19th.
“Our seventh grade Cowgirls also showed some grit and brought home a third place trophy.”
Jazlyn Olivas led the team, finish in fifth place while Chloe Garcia was 13th. Bailey Rodriguez finished 20th and Bella Rodriguez was 21st.
Cotulla will be in action this Saturday at the Ricardo Gallegos Cross Country Invitational in Crystal City.
