DILLEY WOLVES FOOTBALL
First postseason spot since 2018 up for grabs this week if Dilley can top Natalia.
Seth Cano accounted for three touchdowns as Dilley rolled offensively, cruising to a lopsided 33-7 win over the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs on the road last Friday.
Dilley jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Mustangs cracked the scoreboard and then reeled off 19-unanswered points to close the game.
“We came out strong,” DHS Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David Silva said. “Things are starting to click, offensively. We’re spreading the ball around and our playmakers are making plays.
“Our offensive line is getting better every week; Jose Rodriquez, Raul Molina, and Jonathan Eguia had big games.”
The Wolves’ defense also came up big once again, limiting Nixon-Smiley to a mere 173 yards of total offense and ten first downs.
“Defensively, we got to the ball and stayed disciplined, reading our keys,” Silva said. “Roman Martel, Aiden Gonzalez and Charles Morales came up with big plays.
“We still need to improve on our extra point and field goal game, those points will be big in close games.”
Ethan Santos opened the Dilley scoring, going in from 14 yards out in the first quarter and a 6-0 Wolves’ lead. Dorian Aranda then took a pass from Cano and went 25 yards for the touchdown. Santos ran in on the converion attempt as the Dilley lead went to 14-0. in the second.
The Mustangs then capped a drive with a seven-yard rushing score to cut into the Dilley lead at 14-7 in the second.
Aranda hauled in his second receiving score of the night as Cano found him in the endzone from three yards just before the half. The extra point attempt was no good and the Wolves extended their margin to 20-7 at halftime.
Jonavyn Gonzalez then broke off a 48-yard touchdown run in the third while Cano went into the endzone from 18 yards out in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Dilley totaled 254 yards of offense and 16 first downs while the defense forced three turnovers, two fumbles and an interception.
Cano went six of 11 passing for 60 yards and two touchdowns while Santos finished with 76 yards rushing on 22 carries and a score. Gonzalez added 65 yards on only five carries with a touchdown.
With a 2-1 mark in District 15-3A, Division II, Dilley sits in solid position to clinch a playoff spot this week with a win over Natalia.
The Wolves have dropped four straight contests to Natalia in their series. The four wins, however, mark only seven for the Mustangs over the last 34 games. Natalia took a narrow 12-6 decision a year ago.
Poth and Comfort currently sit atop the standings at 2-0 apiece.
