Shawn Streib Gray was the guest speaker and her program, A Streib Family History and the Family’s Connection to Garner State Park was the special presentation during the November 9 meeting of the Caddel-Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
The meeting was called to order at 10:35 a.m. by President Kay Anderson. Kay welcomed 17 members and four guests. Susan Knight, introduced our speaker.
First Vice President Susan Knight reported that our next business meeting will be in January. The program will be, Stories of the Texas Rangers.
President Kay Anderson visited the Leakey ISD fourth grade class regarding the Texas History Essay contest. She received 19 thoughtful thank you letters from the students. CRT Sponsor Billie Nast reported that the John Blanton II chapter of Children of the Republic of Texas met November 5 with three members of CRT, four DRT members, and one guest present. The next CRT meeting will be January 14, 2024, celebrating the one year Chartering Anniversary.
Diane Mann, DRT Second Vice President, presented an interesting and informative program on the history of the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo, where this meeting was held.
Billie Nast, Roberta Himebrook, Marda Selman and Kay Anderson attended the District VIII Workshop in New Braunfels on October 21. The Christmas Potluck Luncheon is December 7 at 11:30. Roberta Himebrook has graciously opened her home once more for this holiday celebration.
Becky Raymond and Kay Anderson delivered boxes of donated items for the Border Patrol – Moral, Welfare, and Recreation Department, to the Uvalde Border Patrol office, after our October 12 meeting. These donations were very much appreciated. We continue to recycle items at Utopia Recycles and the Uvalde Recycling Center. Membership in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas is open to women at least sixteen years of age who can prove lineal descent from men and women who rendered loyal service to Texas prior to its annexation in 1846 by the United States or have an ancestor who lived in Texas or fought for the Republic of Texas prior to Texas becoming a state.
