Hundreds of pieces of mail are strewn across the roadside grass near Hwy 85 on the outskirts of Dilley shortly after noon on Monday, December 4, after a US Postal Service truck was struck during law enforcement officers’ pursuit of a vehicle whose driver was attempting to evade capture by the US Border Patrol. Reports from the scene of the crash indicated that Frio County sheriff’s deputies and other agencies were assisting the USBP agents in bringing the fugitive to a halt in the high-speed chase when they encountered the mail truck, whose driver was making a U-turn in the road. Officers have confirmed that the mail truck was struck with sufficient force to throw it off the paved road and send it into a rollover, spilling its cargo. There have been no serious injuries reported from the incident. The case marks the latest in a series of interceptions in which local deputies, police and border agents have encountered smugglers transporting undocumented immigrants and narcotics through South Texas. Local agencies have followed policies of keeping high-speed pursuits away from residential areas. (Courtesy Photo)
