GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Missed free throws proved costly for Pearsall as the Lady Mavs lost a 66-43 non-district decision to the Lady Javelinas in their only basketball outing last week on Tuesday, December 12.
Kristen Morales paced the Lady Mavs as she finished with nine points, four rebounds and an assist.
“Had we made our free throws, we missed 16 as a team, the score at the end would not have been so bad,” PHS Head Coach Victoria Rodriguez said. “I feel like it was a good matchup for us right before we start district play against Floresville.
“Floresville is a very athletic team with a lot of experience. They are going to be a tough matchup for us.”
Crystal City took a 12-8 first period lead in the Tuesday evening contest but took control in the second as they outscored Pearsall 19-11 in the stanza to surge to a 31-19 halftime advantage.
The Lady Javelinas continued their onslaught in the third as they outpointed Pearsall 22-12 to build a 53-31 lead going into the fourth. Pearsall was able to slow Crystal City in the final stanza but fell 66-43.
Sarah Brady added eight points, nine rebounds and a steal while Izaely Ovalle added seven points and four rebounds.
Jeralynn Gutierrez tallied five points, four rebounds and three steals while Estrella Mainez finished with three points and eight rebounds.
Pearsall opened league play Tuesday evening at Floresville but will then be off until Friday, December 29 for the Christmas break. They will host Uvalde that evening and then hit the road to take on Carrizo Springs on Tuesday, January 2.
