BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
A week after splitting non-district outings, Dilley dropped its league opener to state ranked Lytle 82-55 on Friday, January 12.
The offense opened up on fire and pulled out to a 41-37 lead at the half on the defending district champion Pirates. Lytle turned the game, however, with a strong third period, outscoring Dilley 27-9 in the stanza to take a 64-50 lead into the fourth.
“The boys started off firing on all cylinders and led at the half, 41-37,” DHS Head Coach James Rodriguez said. “Lytle came out strong in the third and that’s where the game slipped through our hands.
“I was very pleased with the guys for competing and showing up despite missing one of our starters, Dorian Aranda, who was at the All American Bowl for football. This gave us a glimpse of how good we can really be if we come out, play unselfish basketball and trust one another.”
Jacob Lopez paced Dilley with 16 points and went six of ten from the free throw line. Benjamin Gonzales added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists while Alex Ayala added eight points and seven rebounds. Senior Seth Cano added seven points, nine board and three assists for Dilley.
The team hosted Natalia Tuesday evening for Parents Night and will be at Cotulla on Friday.
