Several running in primaries for sheriff, county commissioners’ seats
The Frio-Nueces Current will host a candidates’ forum at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 11, in the Frio County Community Room and has invited all those running for election as sheriff and county commissioners to address the public.
The forum is held in advance of the March 5 primary elections in which a number of candidates have filed bids to become their party nominees to the general election in November.
The Community Room is in a building adjacent to the Frio County Courthouse in downtown Pearsall.
With Frio County Sheriff Mike Morse choosing not to seek a second four-year term, the position is open this year, and two candidates have put their names in the ring.
Current Frio County Chief Deputy Pedro “Peter” Salinas, former Pearsall Police Chief, is making a bid alongside former Frio County Sheriff Asencion “Albert” DeLeon Sr., who served in the position from 2017 to 2021. DeLeon is also a former chief of police for Dilley.
Salinas and DeLeon are running in the Democratic Party primary. There is no Republican Party contender for the position of sheriff.
In the race for Frio County Pct. 1 commissioner, incumbent Jose “Joe” Vela is completing his first term in office ands faces challenges from Democratic Party candidates Luis F. Cuellar and Humberto “Humby” Gonzales in the March primaries. The prevailing candidate will face Vickie “Coach” Camacho, who is running as an independent, in the November general election.
In Precinct 3, incumbent Comm. Raul Carrizales Sr. faces a challenge from candidate Edward Carrizales in the Democratic Party primary.
The candidates for sheriff and commissioners’ seats have been invited to take part in the forum by giving an opening statement and then responding to questions that have been filed in advance by Frio County constituents.
Each candidate will be given time to answer, and other candidates will be allowed a follow-up response if they choose to offer input.
The event will be timed and moderated by the Frio-Nueces Current and will be broadcast on social media.
Questions from the public must be filed in advance of the event, either in person at the newspaper office at 321 East San Marcos Street in Pearsall, by mail to PO Box 1208, or by email to Chief Staff Writer Breyana Segura at [email protected], Managing Editor Manuel Azocar at [email protected], or Editor Marc Robertson at [email protected]. Questions from the public will be subject to editing and may be consolidated if more than one are similar. All questions submitted to the newspaper must include the author’s name and phone number, although they will be asked anonymously during the forum.
